We hear foreign people often say “Japanese work too much”. And that is true: work occupies a big part of life for Japanese people. Employees who work at a typical company in Japan start working at 9:00AM. Then many of them can’t go home before 7:00PM. Because of recession and merit system Japanese companies recently introduced from western countries, employees try to get good results so they work harder and harder until the hour to catch the last train to go home.

In such Japanese companies, it does not mean that every Japanese can work quickly and efficiently. There are the people who cannot work correctly or are useless at work in Japanese companies. When I see my friends and talk about our work, these “useless people” often become a topic of conversation. I will tell you now about two typical “useless people”.
A-san was working in the same company as my friend. He graduated from the university and directly entered the company. He was trying hard to get knowledge of his work. The company was a small traditional Japanese company and the CEO had a lot of influence on the employees. A-san often made mistakes and the CEO would scold him a lot. His coworkers felt sorry for him at first. But they were shocked in a bad way when they heard the story: he was asked to deliver something to another company by his boss, he went out but he lost his way completely and didn’t call his coworkers nor his boss. He wandered around for 3 hours and in the end he came back to his office. 1 year after the CEO finally told him “Why don’t you quit now?” and A-san left the company.

Another “useless person” is B-san who works at the same company as another of my friends. The company B-san works for has a relaxed atmosphere and working hours are flexible. When he joined the company, he was working hard on his project and he stayed at the office until late. But his coworkers wondered why he needed so much time to complete small tasks. So they realized he was a quite inefficient person. 1 year after he entered the company, he changed his work style suddenly. He started to refuse tasks his coworkers asked him, even if he was a member of the project, he continued to do nothing. Of course his coworkers were doing a lot of overtime work. But he didn’t do anything. His coworkers complained to their boss about him, but the boss was very nice to him and didn’t blame him at all. That B-san is still working at the same company now, and he spends his days doing nothing.
Both A-san and B-san are “useless” but their companies are not the same so they were treated differently. A characteristic of Japanese companies was the seniority-based system, a long time ago, and people like B-san could reach a high position even though they were not so efficient. But time has changed, now many Japanese companies use the merit system. In many companies if you are “useless” you will be fired easily. B-san is quite lucky to still be employed by this company but if the economic situation of the company gets bad, he will be the first target of the layoffs. We will see what is going to happen to him.
