I heard that the song “Skinny Love” that the young British singer “Birdy” made a cover version of was really good. So I immediately listened to the song on Youtube and it was a good and “setsunai” song. The song made a deep impression on me, when I listened to it, I was overwhelmed by a sadness squeezing my heart. I believe this song fits perfectly the word “setsunai”.

At that time a question came to my mind: how could “setsunai” be translated into English? I checked immediately on the Internet and it seemed there were various interpretations, people describe it from a simple “pain” to “sad inside”/”bittersweet”/”heartbreaking” or also many other words. Personally none of the words felt perfectly accurate; as I thought the words expressing a feeling are hard to translate in another language.
Japanese or foreigners, we are the same human beings, so I think we can experience the same “setsunai” feeling. But in some countries there is a word for “setsunai”, but in other countries there might be none. While I was listening to “Skinny Love”, I realized I could not express my own feelings accurately with words from a foreign language.
Anyway, if one of you knows an English word carrying the Japanese nuance of “setsunai”, please tell me.
