Last week, one of my friends told me that his coworker was scolded by his boss, shouting with a loud voice in front of everybody. He made some mistake and his boss got mad and scolded him harshly and loudly, in front of the other employees.

When I heard that story, I suddenly remembered about my former co-worker A-san. In the high school I used to work for there was A-san, he was always a little awkward and couldn’t keep his cool, so he was making a lot of mistakes with his work. The boss was always keeping an eye on him and in the teachers’ room where other teachers were, A-san would often receive his boss’ criticism and hatred.
The most shocking thing was a scene that I saw when I arrived early one morning: A-san was standing still by the boss’ desk. That day, I hadn’t completed all my work from the previous day, so I had arrived at the school earlier than usual, but from such early hours A-san was already being scolded by the boss. Probably A-san must have thought that he could get some work done in the early morning too, but the boss called him to his desk and the sermon started. Poor A-san. Not getting any work done, and getting scolded by the boss from the morning put him in a terrible mood. And even more when there are other teachers watching the scene.
Among the people who are considered as bosses, there are some who will scold their subordinates in public without any hesitation. Why on earth are they doing such a thing? Maybe to relieve their stress, to blow some steam or to make an example for the other employees? It’s obvious that those bosses don’t care about the feelings of the employees who made a mistake nor about their future.
For people who were scolded in public, the only thing remaining is the hatred for the boss and not at all a reflection about their mistake. If the boss really had in mind the performance of the company, or the future of the employee, he would never scold in public. But inside Japanese companies, there are some people who will do such a thing without hesitation.
Here is a story of when I was in primary school: one of my friends would not obey the teacher and whenever he did something bad the teacher would scold him in front of the entire class. Now that I think about it I wonder: didn’t that teacher have a problem controlling his anger? This student who was scolded in front of everybody all the time didn’t listen to the teacher at all, it was obvious that this kind of instruction was not effective at all.

As I expected, the act of scolding someone in public is just a way for a powerful person to blow some steam by transferring the anger to somebody else. I think that such persons who can’t control their anger should not become teachers nor supervisors in companies. They are in a position of training people, they have the responsibility to develop the abilities of their students or subordinates, so they should not scold others without any purpose other than appeasing their bad temper.

If you happen to have this kind of boss, it’s better to just ignore him for the time being.
