When I went shopping at the supermarket the other day, the cashier didn’t give me any bag for the food I bought. After I asked her “Could you give me some bags?”, she answered “It’s 5 yen for one bag.”. About 10 years ago, we used to get as many free plastic bags as we wished in every supermarket. But recently the number of supermarkets where we have to pay for bags has been increasing. I understand this is an effort to protect the environment however when I forget to bring a big bag, I don’t like so much having to pay to get one.
スーパーではエコへの
Supermarkets are following some ecologic program but in department stores the goods you buy are still excessively wrapped. For example, when you buy a box of sweets, the box will definitely be wrapped beautifully in some wrapping paper and will be put into a big paper bag. Worse, every single sweet inside the box is actually wrapped individually. Every time I open a box of sweets, I feel that such over-wrapping is unnecessary. It is beautiful to the eyes, but it is definitely a waste of paper. Also, when you order some takeout food and drink in a cafe or at McDonald’s, the staff first puts the food and the drinks into separate bags and after that puts both bags into an another big paper bag. After you finish eating your meal, all the bags become garbage.
スーパーでのビニール
Besides supermarket plastic bags, there are still many other things for which we could cut excessive wrapping. But in Japan there is the custom of properly wrapping gifts even when the gift is just a box of sweets, so it might be quite difficult to change this tradition. When I travel abroad and buy some souvenirs, I won’t usually receive a good paper bag nor a wrapping service unless I go to some high-end shop. For that reason, I feel a little awkward when I give foreign souvenirs to my Japanese friends. We Japanese have the image that presents should be well decorated, so souvenirs without any bags nor wrapping tend to look cheap.
プレゼントへの
If we put a stop to the over-wrapping of presents, I think that Japan could furthermore contribute to the reduction of garbage.
