When I meet my female friends and talk with them, one of them will definitely start talking about her desire to be slim. Actually that kind of girls who say such a thing are not fat at all, but they are too obsessed with the fact of being slim.
When you look at the girls walking in the city, you can hardly find an obese girl in Japan. Last summer I visited England twice, and it was quite hard to find slim girls over there. Compared to other countries, I think we don’t have so much obese people in Japan. But young girls especially are always thinking about a way to be slim.

My friend who is 29 years old and has two kids is quite fat. But she doesn’t seem to care about her weight at all. Also, I never heard once she was on diet. If she says she wants to lose weight, of course I will support and encourage her, but people who’d better go on a diet don’t often talk like this.
My male friends often said that their type of girls was a slim, cute and short girl. We can understand that Japanese girls are obsessed with being slim because of this fact. Being fat is not healthy and it’s not cool at all. However if this mindset of the Japanese society, about girls having to be slim, was to change and become less oppressive I think we wouldn’t have to feel so much stress about our weight, we wouldn’t have to spend our precious time talking about stupid diet during girls’ conversation.
